Past Community Service Outreach
Hope Community Foundation
FSLSO staff has donated their time to assist with the Hope Community Foundation, which falls under the Big Bend Coalition for the Homeless. Hope Community provides counseling and training to transition homeless individuals and families into permanent homesteads. Staff assisted with the construction of bunkbeds and readying a new wing for future program residents. Also, members of the FSLSO staff work in teams to purchase, cook, and serve dinner to the residents of Hope Community on a quarterly basis and “adopted” families for Christmas.
The Dale Pullen Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament
For 17 years, the Florida Surplus Lines Service Office (FSLSO) continued its support of community activities by hosting an annual charity golf tournament each year during the month of April in memory of Dale Pullen, son of FSLSO Executive Director, Gary Pullen. Dale lost his life in an automobile accident in February 2000, which inspired family and friends to promote seatbelt safety throughout the community through the “Buckle Up for Dale” campaign.
Along with the “Buckle Up For Dale” campaign, the Pullen family also organized a scholarship fund in loving memory of Dale. The Dale Pullen Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at the urging of family friends wanting to create a lasting tribute that would allow Dale’s love of music to continue through the lives of other talented students. FSLSO's staff organized and hosted an annual golf tournament, with assistance from non-profit Leon Friends of Music, to raise funds in support of the scholarship awards given to local high school students.
Annual golf tournaments concluded in 2017. The funds raised and managed by the Community Foundation of North Florida provide a scholarship fund in Dale’s name, awarded annually.
